Chemical Peels offer an excellent means for facial rejuvenation. Chemical peels can be used to treat facial aging changes including wrinkles and creases. Chemical peels can also effectively treat pigmentary changes of skin such as “sun” spots, brown pigment spots, benign and pre-malignant skin conditions.
Chemical peels are categorized into superficial peels, medium depth peels and deep depth peels. The terms superficial, medium and deep peels refer to the depth of penetration into the skin. The deeper the peel, the greater the change or improvement can be seen.
Superficial peels are lighter treatments that use glycolic acid, alpha hydroxyl acid, or Jessner’s peels. Microdermabrasion is a form of superficial peeling. These therapies are beneficial in giving your skin a brighter appearance or “glow”. Many of these treatments are successfully used by well-trained estheticians. Over time, with repeat treatments, very fine wrinkles, pores and skin texture can be improved.
Medium Depth Peels (TCA peels)
Medium depth peels are performed by Dr. Albert Fox in the office. Medium depth peels are “doctor strength” peels that are ideal for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, pigment changes (dyschromias, “liver spots”, “blotchy skin”), benign and pre-malignant skin conditions (i.e. actinic keratoses).
Medium depth peels do require a recovery period from a few days to one week. As the “old skin” peels away, new skin forms. New collagen and elastin are formed, improving fine lines and wrinkles.
Deep Depth Peels (Baker-Gordon-Phenol Peel)
Deep depth peels are considered the “gold standard” by which the results of other chemical peels and laser therapies are often compared to. The Baker-Gordon-Phenol Peel is excellent for severe wrinkles and very deep peri-oral (lip) rhytids. This peel is performed in a monitored setting, often with light sedation.
A Baker-Gordon-Phenol peel penetrates deeply into the skin. New collagen and elastin are formed as the skin heals. The recovery period is typically 10 to 14 days.
A pre and post chemical peel skin care treatment plan will be designed for your needs to obtain the maximal benefit.
A confidential consultation with Dr. Albert Fox with a thorough evaluation of your skin needs will help determine the type of chemical peel that is right for you.
